4. Αιτιολόγηση της αξιολόγησης:

This very recently discovered species is, under our present knowledge, a strict endemic of the eastern Balkans in the area of the crossing borders of Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey (Marinov 2001, Grebe et al. 2004, Boudot et al. 2004). All known nine inhabited streams fall within a 10,900 km² area and pertain to both the Eastern Rhodopes and the northern and southern foot slopes of the Istranca mountains, the latter being an Eastern continuity of the Rhodopes range. This area has a hot and humid climate and bears often a forest cover, which is used both for wood production and traditional extensive rearing of goats and sheep. A number of valleys, when not planted with conifers, are well preserved and bears a great entomological and botanical richness. There are no immediate threats as long as traditional human activities are maintained, but intensification of agriculture and of conifer plantations in connection with the extension of the European Union may be a future threat. In September 2003, the type locality was totally dried and therefore stream drying connected to abnormal summer drought and global climatic change is another obvious threat.

9γ. Πληθυσμός:

Nine streams are presently known to be inhabited by this species. The species is abundant at some of the places inhabited, more reduced in others (Beron & Popov, 2004; Beron, 2006).

9εi. Απειλές (κείμενο):

Most of these forest areas are presently used for traditional extensive rearing of goats and sheep, that produce a number of clearing area. However, intensive conifer plantations have been done in the past and such forest areas seem unfavourable to this species. Additional conifer plantations, water pollution and stream drying in relation to abnormal summer drought may be a threat for this species in the future.
