ΑΞΙΟΛΟΓΗΣΗ ΓΙΑ ΤΟ ΚΟΚΚΙΝΟ ΒΙΒΛΙΟ

1α. Επιστημονικό όνομα:
Dermochelys coriacea (Vandelli, 1761)
3i. Εξάπλωση:

The Leatherback sea turtle has a worldwide distribution, and although it nests primarily in tropical and subtropical zones, it has the widest latitudinal distribution at sea among sea turtles. It feeds mainly on jellyfish which it hunts in long-range migrations and at great depths (>1,000 m). It doesn't reproduce in the Mediterranean, and therefore it is considered a "visitor species" from the Atlantic. Comparison of by-catch rates in the Mediterranean and in the Atlantic shows that its occurrence in the Mediterranean is 60-200 times lower than in the Atlantic. In Greece, after a three year (1982-1984) systematic survey, 11 large individuals were recorded, all dead after incidental capture in fishing gear or killed intentionally after capture.
