Abstract:

Plumages of males and females of the pied wheatear O. pleschanka pleschanka (Lepechin, 1770) and the cyprus pied wheatear O. p. cypriaca (Homeyer, 1884) are described. Special attention is paid to females of nominate O. p. pleschanka. In contrast to the nominate race, O. p. cypriaca shows almost no sexual dimorphism in plumage. Several measurements show significant differences between both subspecies; wing-length measurements do not overlap. Males of O. p. cypriaca have on the average a larger tail than females, but individual measurements overlap considerably. Biometrical sex differences in nominate O. p. pleschanka are not the same for each population. The songs of O. p. pleschanka and O. p. cypriaca are quite unlike each other. O. p. cypriaca is best considered a separate species.
