Abstract:

A survey of M. monachus in Greece is given from previous data and from recent records. The numbers varyied depending on eographical areas: continental Greece: 20-30; Sporades Islands; Ionian Islands: 30-40; Cyclades Islands: 70-90; Dodecanese: 80-100; Circle and Islands in the Sea of Crete: 30-50. The total number of monk seals in Greece was estimated to be 310. The numbers are now dangerously low. The main factors involved are linked with Man: disturbance, shooting and pollution. Immediate protection of this species appears necessary.
