Abstract:

The Monk seal, Monachus monachus, is one of the marine mammals mostly threatened towards extinction. There are about 500 individuals for the worldwide population: the geographical area is extended in the Black sea, all around the Mediterranean, and on the north-west atlantic coast of Africa as far as the 20th parallel, in Mauritania. In the Aegean sea and on the western saharian coasts, in Atlantic, are located the main concentrations of the species, but another population still stands on the northern coasts of Africa.
