Abstract:

During 1973, a severe attack by the coleopteran Conorrhynchus brevirostris Gyll. was observed in a beet plantation Beta vulgaris var. rubra near Morphou, on the north-west coast of Cyprus (Melifronides, 1976). The larva of this pest penetrates the crown of the beet root and bores out galleries via which different root-invading microorganisms find entry; such infested roots cannot be stored and have no commercial value. For control of this pest, several granular organophosphorous and organocarbamate insecticides were tested during 1975 and 1976, and effectively reduced infestation and damage by the beet weevil.
