Abstract:

The tuning of positive phonotaxis in crickets during the period of pulse repetitions was compared to their numbers in sending call signals in male crickets from populations of varying geographic origin (Japan, Israel, South Asia, Cyprus, Turkmenistan) and a hybrid population to understand the mechanisms of the interlinked evolution of the systems of sound production and perception. The greatest similarity was observed between crickets from the Japanese and South Asiatic populations mainly with respect to pulse repetition. Comparison of the populational features of positive phonotaxis in females and the characteristics of call signals in males showed that the systems of sound production and perception developed relatively independently with respect to the number of pulses in sound sendings. However, these systems were strictly interlinked with respect to the pulse repetition period which fact suggested their presence in common neural networks. If in the first case, the shift of the call signal parameters did not necessarily accompany the corresponding changes of positive phonotaxis tuning (if it was not required by biotope acoustic environment), than in the second case, these changes, apparently, took place simultaneously. As a whole, the degree of the linkage of the two systems is determined by the conditions of biotope acoustic environment.
