Abstract: | A comparative analysis of populations inhabiting various acoustical environments is informative enough for understanding mechanisms of co-evolution of sound-production and sound-recognition systems. Seven laboratory cultures of Gryllus bimaculatus de Geer originating from different geographical regions (Japan, South Asia, Africa, Israel, Cyprus, Turkmenia) were compared by six parameters of the male calling song. The results obtained have revealed specificity of populations. Calling songs in Japanese and South Asian crickets are most similar, they may be opposed to those of Mediterranean, African and Central Asian cultures. Their differences are probably due to prolonged isolation of the Far Eastern populations and/or to the necessity of differentiation from the sympatric cricket species, Teleogryllus occipitalis (Serv.) with a similar calling song. |
