The cladoceran annual cycle in the Thermaikos Gulf and the Gulf of Thessalonoki was studied at monthly intervals over a two year-period. At stations situated either close to the open sea or to the estuary, the seasonal evolution was primarily related to temperature and secondly to food resources. At the shallow station, close to the harbour and pollution sources, apart from the winter 1989 peak (due to Evadne nordmanni), Podon polyphemoides dominated the samples without any seasonal pattern.
