Abstract:

Coluber cypriensis n. sp. is an endemic and apparently uncommon species from Cyprus. The diagnostical characters allow clear distinction from all other mediterranean species of Coluber (sensu lato). There is evidence for a relationship with both the C. jugularis and C. rhodorachis group. As long as further material is not available, a definite allocation is not possible. Problems in connection with a revision of the genus Coluber are elucidated. Furthermore, some comments on the herpetofauna of Cyprus are given.
