Abstract:

The thrips fauna (Thysanoptera) of the Greek islands of the Northern Sporades in the Aegean Sea has been studied in spring time. The exploration of 17 of the islands yielded a total of 79 species of which almost 75% are recorded from Greece for the first time. Six of the species (Aeolothrips fallax ZUR STRASSEN 1977, Haplothrips plantaginis PRIESNER 1957, Melanthrips trifasciatus PRIESNER 1961, Rhipidothrips unicolor ZUR STRASSEN 1965, Scirtothrips mangiferae PRIESNER 1932, and Thrips mediterraneus PRIESNER 1934) are even new to the European fauna. Scirtothrips dignus n.sp. is described and compared by means of a key to four other European species of the genus. Haplothrips phyllireae BAGNALL 1933 is synonymized with H. andresi PRIESNER 1931. The number of thrips species from Greece has increased from hitherto 43 to now 108. Abundance and distribution of the thrips species within the archipelago as well as their sex ratio are indicated in a synoptical list. A revised check list (as per II. 1985) of the Greek species of Thysanoptera is added.
